Not actually on a beach but reading about it! On the left, Omaha beach by Joe Balkoski. Published in 2004 but by no means an "old" book. If you want to know what happened on June 6 1944 on Omaha beach this is the one book you need. A genuinely comprehensive narrative with each event put in context of location and time and illustrated with quotes from witnesses and war diaries. And 27 maps as well!
Also recommended is Joe's Beyond the Beachhead (1989) which covers 29th Division from D-Day to the capture of St Lo. It also neatly ties in with Joe's game "St Lo: Normandy 1944".
On the right, Terry Copp's Fields of Fire covers the Canadians in Normandy from Juno Beach to Falaise. A brilliant description and analysis of the fighting. Also great maps with proper elevation analysis.
Not to leave out the British, I have Sword Beach by Stephen Fisher which I hope to get round to later this month.
Much game stuff also going on so further updates in due course.
