What's this!

Travel Battle!

This just popped up on the Perry Miniatures site. A travel Napoleonics game with 2x3D geometric boards each of 10 by 10 1" squares.

The games comes with:

  • 160 x Infantry
  • 24 x Cavalry
  • 4 x Guns and 12 crew
  • 6 x Brigadiers
  • 6 x Buildings
  • 4 x Dice
  • 1 x Set of rules
The miniatures ar 8mm plastic (very interesting!) in red or blue.

This looks great, the only drawback is a £50 pre-order price.

  1. The thing itself is very interesting, but perhaps more-so is what will follow this. Expansions are mentioned and the prospect of 8mm plastics being sold on the sprue will appeal to many. It is also likely that the Perry product will pave the way for gamers to start making their own boards and armies as they emulate rather than buy or that they set out to do something visually bigger, perhaps even more attractive than the 'travel set'

Interesting that the plastic Soldier Company and now Perry, both mainstream figure producers have decided to dip their toe into the grid game side of things, that crossover between boards and figures that interest us both so much .... perhaps thanks to the Command and Colors type games, the commercial viability of grids amongst the figure community is starting to emerge.

We could be looking at a game changer here in hobby terms.

  2. It does look interesting. As far as I'm concerned, it may be the answer to a question I haven't thought of yet.

8mm? Ah yes - what the world really needed was yet another figure scale.

  3. Thanks for your comments. I'm really interested in this product. I like plastic soldiers and grids as you might have guessed! I hadn't spotted the possibility of expansions or getting boxfuls of plastics! Very exciting. The fact that the Perrys are getting into this means that perhaps us grid fans are not a niche interest group.

By the way, I think 8mm would fit nicely with 6mm terrain.

    Cheers

  4. You don't mean I'm going to have to come up with something new to maintain my standing as an oddball? Hatred of hexes and grid-based games is widespread and very persistent, among those who just love to measure things. Doesn't bother me at all, but if square cells are suddenly "on trend" (as i believe one is supposed to say) then I'm not sure what to do next - I feel a vertigo attack coming on!

Sorry to be such an ignoramus here - presumably the new game will come with some rules - anyone seen these?

  5. Hi Tony, Yes, the blurb says the set comes with rules. I don't know that they have been described anywhere. Not only are the Perry's at this but Sam Mustafa's new WW2 game (Rommel) is also grid based. I may have to migrate to point to point or irregular octagons!

    Cheers
